Biography
I wrote my first piece in 2005 for the project ‘Volume 1’, organised by Cluster Klankcollectief and Muzieklab Brabant. Originally I studied violin at the conservatory in Tilburg, but first in 2008 I decided to focus on composing only. I did not study composition, but the enthusiasm of the musicians I worked with and private lessons by Willem Jeths are supporting me a lot.
My compositions were commissioned by Muzieklab Brabant, festival November Music 2006 and 2009, festival open Systems in Germany and MC De Toonzaal in Den Bosch. Pianoduo Post and Mulder performed my piece at the Gaudeamus Music Week in 2008. I worked together with Thelema trio, Erik Bosgraaf and duo Oliver and Heggen, Heleen Hulst and An Raskin, Aart Strootman and Amsterdam Bridge Ensemble. In 2010 I made the sounddesign of a theaterplay by Boy Jonkergouw. At the moment an installation made in cooperation with Erik Bosgraaf and visual artist Eric Langendoen is exhibited at MC De Toonzaal in Den Bosch.
From the idea that every sound has a physical appearance; elastic, raw, smooth, liquid, etc. I write compositions in which rhythm is secondary to shape and movement. Where a clear pulse is heard it is done only with the intention to enhance the structure of a sound. From this point of view it is not strange that I was really impressed by the rhythmic patterns of echo location sounds made by bats. In my piece ‘Chiroptera’ I used recordings from bat detectors in the soundtrack. In ‘Morph’ natural forms and processes, for example rocks, worn down by erosion, were my inspirations. The composition ‘Liquids’ is based on the different kinds of viscosity of fluids. Movement and transformation are the key elements. The piece is constantly changing on a large scale and on a detailed level, fluently undergoing variations in tempo, color and pitch.
